Is the Age of Philosophers Reborn?

Nowadays, as we experience rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, we often encounter discourses that the speed of technological developments affects our current lives positively or negatively.

A shot from Raphael's "The School of Athens" masterpiece

While the first discourse is that artificial intelligence will take away our jobs, the second is that it will make it easier to do the existing jobs. A third discourse is that existing jobs and ways of doing business will no longer exist, and therefore new jobs and lifestyles will arise.

There is a grain of truth in all three statements. However, the most important result is the value that artificial intelligence will bring in return when it takes away the operational work we have: spare time opportunity.

Have you ever thought about what could happen with such an exchange?

For example, humanity may experience a renaissance again. Or if we go even further back, we may be able to return to a life on philosophy as in Ancient Greece in the near future!

In order to understand whether that is possible or not, we need to understand the structure that has formed the basis of the rise of philosophy in Ancient Greece.

First of all, the freedom of expression was at a very high level in Ancient Greece, which had a direct participatory democracy system. The ancient Greeks could vote and have a say in state affairs without intermediaries.

In today's world, people's freedom of expression is at a very high level thanks to technology, even if they are not yet in government affairs. For instance, each individual can open a YouTube channel and share their views, or they can publish their statements through different social media channels in a way that does not interfere with the freedom of other people. Moreover, as technology progresses, the acceleration of the transition to a more decentralized administration system is another catalyst effect.

Secondly, due to its geographical advantage, Ancient Greece was a state that hosted many different cultures. For this reason, ideas from different geographies could be discussed easily. Considering that the world, which has become more globalized with technology, is on the way to become a virtual village, multiculturalism is stronger today than it used to be.

The last and most important thing to know is the leisure time that comes with welfare because one of the biggest reasons why philosophy could be practiced in Ancient Greece was that the sailors and merchants of Ionians, who were engaged in trade, had a lot of free time due to their wealth.

Of course, as in the past, it is not possible for everyone to be rich nowadays too. Even if it is no guarantee that wealth will lead to leisure. As a result, the way to have a sustainable free time is that the work you have to do can be done by robots and artificial intelligence. In this way, human beings will be able to do only what they want to do.

If the conditions are right and ready, people will have enough time to re-think about the source of life and the meaning of existence. Who knows, maybe philosophy will appear as a new business line of the modern world!
