The Matrix: Neo-Renaissance

Sistema - 2.5 minutes • Mar 01, 2023

"Never send a human to do a machine's job" – Agent Smith (The Matrix, 1999)

In our previous post, we talked about whether the age of philosophers might come again. If the age of philosophers is to come again, is it possible for us to experience a renaissance period again?

The Renaissance was a period of great artistic, scientific, and cultural achievements, marked by a renewed interest in classical art, literature, and philosophy. It is often considered as a bridge between the Middle Ages and the modern era too. With this logic, it can be said that this new renaissance can be a bridge between the post-modern era, we are still in, and upcoming artificial intelligence era.

So what will this new era look like?

Are we moving towards a world where we can connect with our minds to machines like in the iconic movie The Matrix?

There are so many quotes and metaphors in this movie series that it is impossible to fit them all in one post! However, most probably the first scene that comes to our mind is the moments when Neo, the protagonist, is uploaded with knowledge for seconds.

In fact, isn't this scene a much more evolved version of what we call scenario-based digital learning today? One way to develop the human decision making skills is through scenario-based digital learning, where employees can learn and apply new skills in a simulated environment. This approach can be thought of as similar to Neo's realization in The Matrix that "I know kung-fu" - he was able to learn and apply a new skill within a simulated environment, which allowed him to be better prepared for the real world. By using scenario-based digital learning, employees can practice and perfect new skills in a safe, simulated environment, before applying them in the real world.

One other of the most iconic lines from the movie is when Morpheus, the resistance leader, explains the Matrix to Neo, "Unfortunately, no one can be told what the Matrix is. You have to see it for yourself." This quote highlights the idea that true understanding can only come from experiencing something firsthand. Similarly, in our technology-driven world, it can be easy to become numb to the rapid advancements happening around us, and only by actively engaging with and understanding these technologies can we truly grasp their impact on our lives.

Again another quote from Morpheus, "I can only show you the door, you're the one that has to walk through it." This statement is a reminder that while technology can open doors of opportunity, it's up to humans to decide how to use it. It's essential to consider the ethical and societal implications of AI and Intelligent Automation and to use them responsibly.

Briefly, the Matrix is a reflection of our technology-driven world. It raises thought-provoking questions about the relationship between technology, AI, and humanity. The quotes from the movie serves as a reminder of the need for active engagement and understanding of the technologies shaping our lives. As we continue to develop these technologies, let us keep in mind the wisdom of Morpheus and Neo!
