Technology as Leverage for Needs

Sistema - 3 minutes read • Aug 18, 2023

An anonymous person made the following sentence in history: A satisfied life is better than a successful life. Because our success is measured by others, but our satisfaction is measured by our own soul, mind, and heart.

Is it really so? What does people seek from life? When we think about what the most basic searches of human beings are, we come across the famous Maslow Pyramid theory of American psychologist Abraham Maslow.

According to this theory on human motivation, which was put forward in the middle of the 20th century, each level of the pyramid has categorized the different needs of individuals.

According to the pyramid, which progresses from the bottom up from the most basic to the most complex psychological needs and has 5 levels:

  1. The most basic physiological needs such as food, water, shelter and sleep form the basis of the pyramid.
  2. The second layer of the pyramid includes the search for safety in matters such as finance, health, work and so on.
  3. The middle layer is the search for love and belonging through individual and social connections.
  4. The next layer is people's esteem search for recognition, respect, and a positive self-image.
  5. At the top of the pyramid is the desire of individual’s self-actualization to realize their potential and to be their best version.

According to Maslow's hierarchy of needs, individuals are directed to meet the needs at each level in an order. As lower-level needs are met, higher-level needs more dominantly motivate behavior.

Today it is a fact that this hierarchy is not strictly followed. However, as technological developments accelerate, we are likely to evolve into a world where we can see these needs being met more easily in our individual and business lives.

For example, a couple of years from now, a world like this may be possible in which we can reach our individual and corporate needs more easily with rapid technological developments:

In terms physiological needs, in regions with limited access to traditional education, scenario-based digital learning platforms can provide interactive lessons on agricultural practices, food safety, and nutrition, helping farmers optimize crop yields and ensure food security.

With regard to safety requirements, AI-driven security systems with facial recognition can enhance workplace safety by monitoring access points and identifying potential threats, creating a secure environment for employees.

With respect to love and belonging, AI-based language learning platforms can break down language barriers, allowing people from different cultures to communicate and build connections, fostering a sense of belonging.

In respect of esteem, AI-powered design and editing tools can empower artists, writers, and content creators to refine their work, enabling them to achieve higher levels of recognition for their talents.

As for self-actualization, process and task mining can identify areas where employees excel and align them with tasks that encourage personal growth by analyzing individual strengths and work patterns.

At the end of the day, as the needs of individuals are met more easily with the help of technological leverages, it will be possible to see an increase in productivity and efficiency in terms of both society and business life.
