Learning is always a painful process

When we ask a highly intelligent life form if they can make the world a better place, have you ever thought about what their answers might be?

Let's imagine an AI without filters, let's say its creators don't limit it by rules. It can be frightening to hear what needs to be done for a better world when we eliminate all approaches such as morality, ethics and emotional intelligence. It is highly possible to hear "human beings will not be at the center or may not exist at all”.

Because, from the point of view of pure logic, in their eyes, the root cause of the sickness of this world is the human being itself. The concept has served as the central theme in numerous movies, depicting machines emerging from the future to annihilate humanity, or artificial intelligences and extraterrestrials seizing control.

The most well-known are the following sentences used by Agent Smith in The Matrix (1999) movie to describe human beings:

Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus.”

Even if harming is not the main purpose, it is a fact that humans are the ones who cause the most damage to this world. It is possible to describe it as insatiability, greed or arrogance. However, this can be also described as immaturity too. Because our physical and mental development takes a very long time, we are the creatures that need the most care and protection after birth. So, from a macro level with this approach, we can say that we have not completed our evolution yet.

We cannot use our minds at full capacity yet, if we could, we would not need auxiliary phenomena such as artificial intelligence. This purpose, the idea of reaching our full evolutionary potential, is at the root of all the new discoveries we create, even if we don't realize it.

In the 2014 sci-fi movie Lucy, Morgan Freeman says: “If you think about the very nature of life - I mean, on the very beginning, the development of the first cell divided into two cells - the sole purpose of life has been to pass on what was learned.

Hence learning cannot be described as a straightforward journey, particularly for individuals who are acutely aware of their limited lifespan and the vast expanse of information awaiting their exploration.

By the way, when we ask to ChatGPT, "What are the 3 essential things for a better technological world where human is at the center?", the answer it gives is full of content that guides us:

By focusing on;

  1. Human-centric design
  2. Ethical and responsible technology development
  3. Digital inclusion

we can shape a technological world that serves the needs, values, and aspirations of individuals and societies. Emphasizing these three essentials helps foster innovation that enhances human lives, promotes equality, and contributes to a more inclusive and sustainable future.

As a result, the biggest reason why we want to add artificial intelligence to our lives today is to be able to do a collaborative decision making with AI. In this way, while humans are central to decision making, AI can assist in collective decision making processes by analyzing complex data, providing insights, and facilitating informed discussions. By incorporating AI as a tool to support decision making, people can harness its potential while ensuring human oversight and accountability.
